Russia continues to launch airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, killing civilians, and destroying residential buildings, hospitals, and schools. On 8 May, approximately 60 people were killed after a Russian bomb hit a school in Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast). According to the Ukrainian Education Ministry, since the beginning of full-scale war 1,635 educational facilities across Ukraine have been affected by bombardments and shelling. 126 were completely destroyed. In occupied areas, Russians are trying to de-Ukrainianize schools: they are banning the study of the language, literature and history of Ukraine.Russian occupiers have introduced a “filtering” process in every temporarily occupied Ukrainian city. This “filtering process” is also used on people forcibly deported to Russia. Ukrainian civilians are interrogated, intrusively examined, held in inhumane conditions and humiliated and tortured. On 16 May, the evacuation of Ukrainian soldiers from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol began. Around 1,000 Ukrainian fighters have been besieged at the Azovstal plant for almost 3 months without supplies of medicine, water or food. Many of them are seriously wounded.
Several thousand civilians have been killed in Ukraine due to the Russian full-scale war, among them at least 229 children. At least 423 children have been injured. It is impossible to establish the actual number of dead and wounded due to the fact that the occupation forces are continuing their assault of Ukrainian cities. Russia’s war against Ukraine has already produced over 6,2 million refugees.
